Get your book and find out if is it true we are Jumeira Janes?
Who is kyra Dupont?
I´m a journalist living in Dubai for 3 years
What is your passion in life besides writing?
Writing is really my thing, I´m a curious person, I love doing projects, I like independence I like to come up with an idea and materialized, that is definitely my passion in life.
What brings you to Dubai?
Actually It was the best timing, I was living in Geneva and I was finishing literally the last page of my second book. And my husband said “What about going to Dubai?” So I tough that it could be a good opportunity as there is so much going on there.
Who do you write for?
I write for myself as writing is the best therapy, but at the same time, not only for me, otherwise it would be a journal , so I always have in mind the readership, I have a projection of people who will read it, but I don´t write for a specific public.
My fantastic Life in Dubai is for any public, for expatriates but not only , it could be interested for locals and also for tourists, It is a snapshot of Dubai and also to get it as a souvenir of Dubai, so is an entertainment reading , is a fun book.
How do you see Dubai from your perspective?
When I came here it was an amazing playground to me I got really interested in the city and people who live here, so I wanted to understand and meet the locals, so I did a book of Emiratis women “Pearls of the Emirates” and then when I finished that project that was very interesting because it gave me a different insight of the local culture, I decide to do a 360 degrees shift and I focused in the expats and I felt like I wanted to talk about the ridiculousness in ourselves and also to find a character that summarize or embodies our lifestyle in Dubai. So that is how “My fantastic Life in Dubai” starts.
Tell me something about “My Fantastic Life in Dubai”?
Dubai is a very special city which lives no one in different and I think Jumeira Jane is the best spoke person for expat´s life’s here because sometimes she is over the top and we go through over the top situations that maybe we will not experience back home, because there is so much here going on and , you know here there is the biggest tower , big projects, and a city like nowhere else.
The city has developed so quickly and so is the same with our lifestyle that it is influenced by this.
That was the idea!
Who is Jumeirah Jane?
She was created in 2001 by Paddy Briggs he gave life to this character , it was Jumeira Jane back then and the she disappeared for a while until now, she´s back !
She is a western woman who has a middle social background and was working in her country but she comes to Dubai for her husband´s work who is in to Oil and Gas company and she stopped working because she had kids and life is so easy here so she suddenly parachuted in her very comfortable life. She has a maid and a driver and she lives in Jumeirah because this is the place where usually expats would have a house , she loves shopping and going for coffees with her girlfriends and talk about the kids that are not raising anymore, actually maids raising them. She is a person who is focus in her appearance as she got a coach and a yoga teacher, a plastic surgeon, a gardener and a pool team, maintenance guide, I mean she is really surrounded by a lot of people. She is also scared by getting old , she is a little bit irritating but she is touching I think she is the touching Jane in the fact that she is able to love herself. But of course she denies to be her, as the same as other Jumeira Janes , they don’t really know that they are Jumeira Janes , that´s what magical about them, they think their friends are.
I didn’t inspire in anyone, is just hysterical, I just reinforce the facts.
Do you have something about Jumeira jane?
Yes I think I have some, and I think we all have. Is like a little bubble here. I think that if you could talk to your friends perhaps at your home country they could ask you, Have you change recently? Or is it only the place where you live and then you will back to normal? ((Laughing))
My fantastic life in Dubai, is just a souvenir, a small coffee book, the purpose is to have fun, I´m not trying to be sociological here , I have some friends who identify theirselfs as Jumeira Janes, like “This is so me”.
It reminds you situations to have been in and that you experienced only here, because is very only Dubai, is so Dubai.
Which advice would you like to give to our women entrepreneurs in Dubai?
I would say, grab your opportunity because here is fantastic, I mean there is less and less, because people are coming up with a lot of ideas, but still there is a great opportunity to start a business here, even before it was difficult for women to find a job here, now the job market is wider I think is easier for women to find a job now, so if you want to do something professionally speaking in a way you have to be an entrepreneur as a woman in Dubai in the UAE I think is great, there is so much still to be created around, I have a lot of friends who started a business here and is going very well, because it starts in Dubai and can grow to the region.
Dubai market is not that big but then it can be expanded and this is what I did with this book, because usually I have a publisher for that book I created my company and then I had to found sponsorships because I wanted to cover the cost of the book I mean it was so interesting because there is not something that I usually do, I´m a writer , a journalist and I became a little bit of entrepreneur and I love it. I discovered a lot of different communities as well as an entrepreneur because different business are run by different communities in printing there is a lot of Indians, in distributions as well, I did business with Lebaneses for sponsorship, a lot of support also from French and local people. It is a great way to get in to this communities and discover the way they function, that was very interesting, and I think they make it easier for businesses here, I mean you don´t have to do the tax papers it’s pretty straight forward but of course it takes a while maybe in the beginning the process can be long to get the authorization , I think is easier to do things like this here that compare to Switzerland.
